Endeavour is a Masterpiece Mystery! Drama, set in Oxford in the 1960s. It stars Shaun Evans as the serious and socially awkward Inspector Morse, who is talented and perseverant but also flawed. Morse's overconfidence sometimes leads him to make mistakes. He also has trouble viewing dead bodies and is liable to faint at the sight of blood. Nevertheless, he is good at puzzles and better than many of his colleagues at making sense of clues.

Morse is partnered with longtime detective Fred Thursday, played by Roger Allam. Thursday has a stronger stomach than Morse and is not afraid to get his hands dirty. He has been known to break the law if he believes he is on the side of right. Morse, on the other hand, believes in doing everything by the book and is alarmed when Thursday takes short cuts.

Morse grows throughout the series, becoming better at his job and more sure of himself. Thursday, meanwhile, acts as his mentor and plays a sort of father figure to the young Morse.

Endeavour exposes the seedier sides of Oxford in the 60s. Morse and Thursday investigate bars, underground sex clubs, and dark alleyways; however, they also investigate corruption in the upper classes. They expose corrupt officials, shady professors and academics, as well as corrupt members of the police department.

The show has an atmosphere very much like that of classic detective shows such as Adam 12, Dragnet and Perry Mason. The scenes play out almost as if they would in a detective novel. The sets, too, have a very classic appearance to them. Many of the buildings look as they would have in the 1950s and 1960s. The props, too, look as they would have in the 60s. Old books, telephones and even pipes are either vintage objects or high quality retro items. The clothing is also fitting for the 60s. Even the extras wear clothing from an older era.
